to the KyPoetry recording of the poem, Identity, written by Kylyra
IdentityIs there an answer? Am I single Perfected in my unique aloneness? Do I end at the boundaries of my flesh A tiny thing of carbon and water weave, Inconsequential In the glacial grind of time? If that is the lay of the land I am blind I stretch out like the mist; Sitting in my parlour I lap the water in the bay, I climb the mountain sides, I float to the stars. There are no differences; There are no distinctions. See that chair in the corner? That's me. |
The word 'aloneness' in the line: Perfected in my unique aloneness is punched to underscore the powerful emotions this word raises for the speaker. 'Inconsequential' in the stanza: Inconsequential In the glacial grind of time is also punched to underscore how tiny the speaker feels while contemplating the lack of a universal spiritual force. I ran the full line: I am blind through this track as well. This was done to add finality and force to the statement. The speaker feels that if she has misinterpreted the universe she is ignorant or blind to the true nature of the universe. This is a powerful statement, and I wanted the listener to feel like it was not only being said in the present but also in the past and the future. The final time the punch track is used is on the words 'no differences' in the stanza: There are no differences; There are no distinctions This was done as an audio confirmation that there are no differences in the speaker's eyes between the speaker and the universe around her. The final two vocal tracks used were for the last two lines: See that chair in the corner? That's me. I recorded the first line with more reverb than on the main voice, giving the listener the feeling that the speaker was pulling away from her audience. The last line is delivered in a whisper, and needed a separate track and mic adjustments to capture optimum sound quality. |
