Poets And Pasties

Sit back.

Sink your mind

Into us;

Tonight we are the main course.

Savour

Our words,

The meat and potatoes

Of our souls.

Enjoy our vegetable

Voices,

Cleaned

Prepped

And cubed

For easy digestion.

The gravy ambience

Of good friends

And good poetry

Will add the right warmth

To the evening.

And our flaky crust?

Take a bow Gary, Amanda, and Andy!

I used seven vocal tracks on this piece. The main track uses my standard room reverb and is centre panned. The title is spoken without background, allowing it to stand as an audio introduction to my work. Two side voices were used in this poem as a chorus effect. During:

Savour Our words

they are used to make mouth noises. One voice does a Hannibal Lecter sound to add an additional humourous aspect to linking the idea of a poet's words to food. The side voices take up the chant 'Be the carrot' on:

Enjoy our vegetable

Voices;

and are heard again, laughing at the end of the piece. Four punch tracks were used to accommodate the different effects used on lines. The first is a ping-pong delay on the opening line 'Sit back'. This was done to audibly pull the audience back into their seats. The other three punch tracks were run on the words 'cleaned', 'prepped' and 'cubed' in the stanza:

Enjoy our vegetable

Voices,

Cleaned

Prepped

And cubed

For easy digestion.

I did this to add an audio push to these three culinary terms. Since each term involves a unique action in the kitchen, I chose to use a unique effect for each word.
