"Oh yes! Very well! Very well!" Tronaugh replied, cackling. He watched as her glowing eyes trotted over to the desk lamp. Bright light flooded the room and he blinked rapidly, trying to adjust his eyes.
"So how's Melissa doing?" he asked.
Tronaugh cackled again and trotted over to the refrigerator, poking through its contents. "She's in hospital."
"What?" Dick demanded, sitting bolt upright, fully awake now.
"Hofpital," Tronaugh mumbled between the food she was stuffing in her mouth. "I mmph phh phh and phph n mnp."
"Swallow your damn food and tell me what's happened!"
Tronaugh obliged by gulping an enormous mouthful down. "Hospital. I did just as you asked and now she's in hospital."
"Okay. Very slowly," Dick said. "Tell me everything."
"Well, she got up in the morning and her hair just wouldn't behave itself, don't you know? So to fix it, your girlfriend got the bright idea of trimming her bangs a little. While she trimmed away I made sure she cut just the tiniest little nick out of one of her nails. So-o-o, when she got dressed for the day and slipped into her nylons - by the way, do you know she wears nylons to play tennis? I just couldn't believe that girl! I mean, nylons for tennis! I would think that would be awfully hot! And -"
"Get on with the story!" Dick interrupted her.
Tronaugh sniffed at him delicately. "I was," she said. "So, anyway, her nylons had a nice long run down the side. When she left the house and went out to the brand new convertible that daddy bought her and saw the run -"
"Wait a minute!" Dick interrupted her again. "She has a convertible?"
"I just said that, didn't I? Where was I? Oh yes! So she sees the run, her car door is open, she leans on the door which swings away from her and she lands smack on the back of her head in the middle of the drive! Knocked her out completely."
"You gave Melissa a concussion?!" Dick roared, jumping to his feet. Mr. Henson next door began pounding on the wall again and yelled that he would make a formal complaint with management in the morning. The three in the flat ignored it.
"Oh, no, no. I didn't give her the concussion. She gave herself the concussion. I just delayed her parents an extra quarter of an hour at the petrol station where they stopped to fill up the car on the way home to make sure that she got that nice sunburn that you requested." Tronaugh cocked her head and looked thoughtfully at Dick. "You know that sunscreen isn't worth a damn anymore! Ozone depletion." She shook her head sadly.
"So Melissa's in hospital with a concussion?"
"And a sunburn!" Tronaugh added happily. "Her hair still doesn't look too good, either."
"That's too much, Tronaugh!" Dick shouted. "You've gone too far! Melissa doesn't deserve that!"
"I thought you wanted her to get a sunburn."
"I meant the concussion!"
"Hmm," Tronaugh replied, looking around the room. "That's exactly what Bob said."
"Who's Bob?"
"Oh, Bob, Robert, Bobby. Bobby the boyfriend. Bobby the bodybuilder boyfriend."
"Melissa has a boyfriend?" Dick asked quietly.
"Oh, she probably wouldn't put it that way, you know. But apparently they've been seeing quite a bit of each other on this holiday. And Melissa's father seemed taken with him."
"Oh?" Dick asked.
