"Well, yes," Tronaugh said contritely. "I thought that would be it but then ... boom."

"Boom?!" he shrieked.

"Well, those cars hold an awful lot of petrol, and you know how that sort of thing can happen. A few punctured areas, a hot engine and ... boom."

Dick trembled with rage. "Is she dead? Did you kill Melissa? Is she dead?"

"Yes, no, and yes, Dick."

He stared at her and she rolled her eyes to the ceiling. "Yes she's dead, no I didn't kill her, and yes, she's dead." She saw the look that boiled across his face. "Look, I'm sorry Dick, okay? That wasn't part of the plan, I know. But it wasn't my fault. Like I told you, we just set the traps and humans step into them of their own free will! There wasn't anything I could do at that point!"

"Get. Out." Dick ground the words out between his teeth.

"Oh, come on, Dick," Tronaugh pleaded. "You can't mean that! We make such a good team now! Besides, where am I supposed to go? It's a big world out there! Think of poor little DT and myself!"

"I command you to get out of my flat! Get out of my life! Just get out! I never want to see you again!"

Tronaugh and DT shuffled to the front door, their heads hung low. "Dick," Tronaugh began hesitantly.

"What?!" he screamed at her.

"We can't really leave as long as you have my hair knotted in the ribbon."

"Here!" He pulled the small bundle from his pocket and threw it at her. "Take it! Get out!"

DT picked up the knotted ribbon and trotted it back to Tronaugh. "So our arrangement is over? DT and I are free to go?"

"Yes! Just get out of my life! Forever!"

"As you wish, sir."

The two demons left by the front door. As they stepped onto the pavement in front of Dick's building Tronaugh turned to DT and said, "Ah! Free at last!" They trotted down the road together, hand in hand.

"That young man never could grasp the nature of reality, could he, DT?" The two had a good laugh together as they set off on their own.
