xii.

Dick felt tired. He didn't have long to prepare; the time remaining to him was alarmingly short. His head hurt over his attempts to trace all possible outcomes in the reality fabric. He was sick of the scheming; besides - he'd won! Mel would be home soon and he found his heart really wasn't in his task anymore

On the afternoon before Mel's family were to leave, Bob planned on taking his new baby - a brand new bright red mustang - and picking up Mel for a long, lazy drive along the coast culminated by a romantic supper at a small but very good restaurant he knew of. Dick had tried to examine all of the angles of the situation, but in the end he'd felt so elated by the fact that Melissa was leaving that he hadn't come up with any real solid ideas.

Tronaugh rolled her eyes at him. "Don't you want me to do anything?"

"I don't know, Tronaugh," Dick said, stretching out on the couch.

"A flying stone to break his windshield? A bird hitting his grill? Anything?"

"Na-a-ah," Dick said expansively.

"Oh, come on, Dick! Don't I get to have some fun today?" Tronaugh pleaded.

Dick groaned out loud. "Alright, if you have to have something to do, make his CD player skip."

"I can't do that Dick. He doesn't have a CD player in the car. It's cassette only."

"Oh?" Dick asked absentmindedly. "Better yet, then, have the player mess up his tape. That should be a nice petty disturbance for the day."

"As you command," Tronaugh replied and left.

It was late at night when the two demons returned. Dick sprawled on the couch watching a movie. He was showered, his laundry was done, and for once his refrigerator was fully stocked. And Melissa would be home tomorrow. Life, he thought, is good.

Tronaugh and DT appeared in the flat in a stink of sulphur. He ignored them for once and kept his attention on the telly. He'd left them a surprise on the counter; two large cheese pizzas with extra onions. He heard them delve into the pizzas noisily, and turned up the volume on the telly. When they finished and an opportune ad came on he muted the sound and turned towards the pair.

"Everything go alright tonight?"

"Perfectly." Tronaugh replied.

"Did Mel and Bob enjoy their last meal?" Dick asked sarcastically.

"No, Dick," Tronaugh replied quietly. "They never made it to the restaurant."

Dick froze, half-risen from the couch, a smile on his face. "What do you mean they never made it?"

"There was an accident, Dick," Tronaugh said softly. She looked up at him quickly. "I did just like you asked! They were driving along, everything was fine, and the cassette player began to unwind his tape." She stopped there.

"And? And?" Dick asked frantically.

"Well, you know statistically those things cause a lot of accidents, Dick. When Bob realized what was happening he took his attention off the road for a moment to try to fix the tape and ... well ..."

"What? Did they hit another car? A truck? What?"

"No, Dick, they -" she motioned with her hand, "went over the cliff."

"They drove over a cliff?!" Dick screamed.

"Yes, and then the car rolled a few times."

"They drove over a cliff and then the car rolled a few times?!" Dick screamed back at her even louder. Something in Dick's mind registered Mr. Henson banging on the wall again but he didn't care.
